This past week we met the Bugle Fairy. The Bugle Fairy taught us about Saint Bernadette. We also studied bears this week. For the bears we read this series of bear books by Karma Wilson...
The kiddos enjoyed the rhyming of these books. Also, the author has a website that provides several activities, It also provided a springboard to talk about the four seasons and could provide an in depth study on bears. A great go along book with this series is Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear? Here is resources for a free lapbook for Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear?
After reading The Art Lesson by Tomie Depaola last week, I gave Princess a big box of crayola crayons just like Tomie had. She was over the moon excited about them and quickly began to color everything. Here's a few highlights...
Princess was able to draw the bear using I Can Draw Animals from Usborne. Not that I want to brag or anything, but up until 3 months ago, she would not even draw a circle--only lines with an occasional zigzag. The writing program we're using has really helped in this area.

What writing program are you using? Jack and Rebecca have terrible terrible fine motor skills and do not draw or color very well at all.
We're using Handwriting Without Tears. They have a preschool program that starts with the very basics of letter formation (big line, little line, big curve, little curve). We did that for a few months before moving to the kindergarten curriculum. They have a lot of hands on manipulatives for the kiddos and we also purchased their cd as well. I also love that it focuses on quality and not quantity of practice. Some of the writing pracitces I've seen with other programs focus heavily on writing the same letter a million times. This would frustrate Princess and she would just give up. I highly recommend Handwriting Without Tears.
